Tiger Prawns

Tiger prawns are also know n as king prawns and the word ‘prawn’ is interchangeable with the American term ‘shrimp.’

Tiger prawns are very popular because they look and taste exotic and are very versatile. They can be pan-fried, grilled or barbequed. Large and  flavoursome. Warm water Tiger prawns have a moist, firm flesh with a distinctly bold, sweet and firm textured meat. Completely different to cold water prawns whose meat can be watery and sometimes taste bland.

Tiger prawns have distinctive grey, black or blue stripes that turn red when cooked. They are best bought and cooked from raw as this will maintain not just the best flavour but the robustness of the meat.

Our Tiger prawns are supplied in a1kg pack with three different sizes in a pack:
6-8, 8-12 and 13-15.

Wine Pairing

Because of the versatility of Tiger prawns, it is a pleasure to match them with wines. The prawn’s texture and flavour means that they so not want to be paired with wines that have been oaked. This month’s recipe is really exciting and so easy to prepare. Chimiichurri is an uncooked sauce that originates from Argentina. It is garlicky, spicy and brilliant emerald green thanks to the fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro and oregano. More zesty and vibrant than pesto it is perfect with Tiger prawns.

Try serving the recipe with a Sauvignon Blanc from Chile which is our medium-priced selection shown below.

Budget (£4.00-£6.00)

Try this Italian Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie available from Tesco at £4.36 per bottle. It is sourced from the cool valleys and mountains across the north of Italy. The wine is fresh and fruity with delicate floral scents and a dry and fresh palate.

Medium Priced (£6.00 - £7.00)

This wine is a perfect accompaniment to our featured recipe this month. It is medium-bodied, fresh, crisp and lively with intense citrus and green apple flavours. Richer tropical fruit flavours mingle with light mineral notes on the long clean finish. This wine is available from Sainsbury’s at  £7.00 per bottle.

Premium: (£10.00 - £15.00)

Try this 2015 Clos St-Jacques Riesling available at Majestic Wine for £13.99 for a single bottle or £11.99 for a mix of six bottles. The vineyard  is situated on the outskirts of the town of Colmar, the regional 'wine capital' of Alsace and one of the driest places in France. The dry conditions and stony vineyards have proven to be ideal for cultivation of Riesling. Typically dry and focused Alsatian Riesling, offering a lemony bouquet accented with hints of golden apple, acacia and smoky mineral notes. Has a mature, developed and firmly structured feel.
